English:
My name is Nuwatan o Kumud, member of the Sakizaya. I had heard ofWikipedia a while ago, then there was this young man who taught me howto use a mouse, how to use Wikipedia, and so on. Step by step, Igradually learned to write and edit Wikipedia [entries]. What I havewritten down is everything I think needed to be documented. These arethe footsteps of our people and some are [how we handle] tribal affairsall along. I want to put them all onto Wikipedia.
This interview was conducted by Tsai-Wei Hung who is a doctoral scholar at the Department of Ethnic Relations and Cultures in the National Dong Hwa University, Hualien, Taiwan with translation help from Buting Nukay and Miku Kumud for the purpose of a post on Rising Voices, Global Voices. Some of the inputs were provided by Subhashish Panigrahi and Yanne C on behalf of Rising Voices.
Note from Tsai-Wei Hung:
There are many who have not officially re-registered themselves as Sakizaya since 2007 (when they finally can). Those who are officially registered as Sakizaya do not necessarily speak the language -- while some non-registered people might. So, the registered number of the Sakizaya population is not necessarily equal to the number of native speakers. Furthermore, per the UNESCO record, the number of Sakizaya speakers went down to 590 in 2017. Theoretically, the number probably went down because the death of elder members is more than the growth in new speakers.
